About the Artist

  Jon Schroeder - Artist

As a life-long resident of Independence, Missouri I developed a passion for art at a young age. Both my travels abroad and a fine arts degree enriched my understanding of artistic styles, techniques and methodology. One strand consistent throughout my artistic career has been to use line, color and form to capture the “essence of the moment.”

In the initial stages of painting I use large, saturated brushes to sketch the subject matter on canvas. The use of expressive brushwork throughout the painting process creates a spontaneous approach that “celebrates” the use of paint as a medium. A full palette of color is applied in sweeping strokes to enhance the subject matter as well as give the illusion of movement, balance and form.

My goal is for all techniques to work in tandem, therefore inviting the viewer to stop and look closely. John Singer Sargent (American Impressionist, 1856-1925) has influenced my development due to his broad, painterly style and ability to capture an “elusive moment” on canvas. My recent studies under Chun Wang, professional Kansas City based designer and artist, have influenced my professional growth as a painter.

I developed an interest in woodcarving during mid-career after studying with several skilled craftsman. Through woodcarving I expanded my understanding of three-dimensional form, varieties of wood, and the subtractive art of carving. As I approach each wood sculpture I first envision the subject matter within the wood itself. I then chisel out the rough form giving special attention to the wood grain. Once roughed out, I then use finer tools to carve and define the details. Some pieces are completed with paint while others are hand-polished to reveal the beauty of the wood.

Some of my past work has been featured in the United States postal calendars, the Postal Life Magazine, and displayed at the United States Post Office Headquarters in Washington.
